On Friday, April 11, 2008 DENTSPLY Canada conducted the 38th Annual Canadian Dental Association/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Research Program. Participating in this year’s program were eight students representing dental schools across Canada. Each of the participating students received an expense paid trip to Toronto, courtesy of DENTSPLY Canada, to compete in the event.
Participating students attended a reception hosted by DENTSPLY Canada at the Royal York Hotel in their honour. Key members of the Canadian Dental Association were invited to attend. This elite grouping included the outgoing President of the CDA, Dr. Darryl Smith; the incoming President of the CDA, Dr. Deborah Stymiest; Dr. Aldo Boccia, Ontario Section Chair of the Pierre Fauchard Academy; and Dr. Bernie Dolansky, President and Chairman of the Dentistry Canada Fund. Dr. Bernie Dolansky, along with Dr. Benoit Soucy served as the judges for this year's event.
Dr. Smith, as outgoing CDA President, introduced the student clinicians at the event, reinforcing the importance of these clinicians and their work in furthering the profession of dentistry. In addition, DENTSPLY received some very kind words from Dr. Smith when he acknowledged "...the strong partnership between DENTSPLY and the Canadian Dental Association." Dr. Smith stated that he could not recall any other industry-based program that could boast 38 consecutive years of support. He gave DENTSPLY credit for both this endeavour as well as its commitment to the profession.
Receiving the 1st Place award was Audrey McNamara from the University of Toronto. As the first place winner, Ms. McNamara received an all expense-paid trip to attend the 2008 American Dental Association meeting in San Antonio, Texas. There she will have the opportunity to present her clinical research with the winners of our other 17 national programs.
