Dr. Rada Sumareva presents Dr. John Burgess with the 2008 Burton C. Borgelt/SCADA Faculty Advisor Award.

Dr. Allen Otsuka from the Southern Illinois University, School of Dental Medicine and Dr. John Burgess from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Dental Medicine were selected by the Board of Governors as recipients of the 2008 Burton C. Borgelt/SCADA Faculty Advisor Awards. These awards were presented by Dr. Rada Sumareva, SCADA’s President, during the DENTSPLY Student Clinician Research Program Awards Ceremony at the 149th American Dental Association Meeting on October 18 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Allen Otsuka has served as the Faculty Advisor at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine for the past 22 years. During this time, he has sponsored and been the research mentor for over 35 dental students as Summer Research Fellows in his laboratory. In addition to mentoring the students in the laboratory, he has helped the students prepare their summer research applications and table clinics for both local and national presentation. Dr. Otsuka epitomizes the ideal qualities of a Faculty Advisor.

Dr. John Burgess, currently a faculty member at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Dental Medicine also has served as a Faculty Advisor at two other dental schools; the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Louisiana State University. He is actively engaged in dental materials research and is the recipient of numerous research grants. Dr. Burgess has mentored student at all levels from gifted and talented high school students, to undergraduate college students through the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Health training grants. His students have presented their research at all the leading scientific meetings. Many have won national research competitions at the American and International Association of Dental Research, the American Dental Association and the National Dental Association. The dedication Dr. Burgess has given to his students make him an ideal recipient of this award.
