THE SCADA STORY

Welcome to SCADA! This organization is comprised of a select and elite group of dental professionals who have participated in dental research competitions at their individual schools and their country’s national SCADA program. This dental student research competition known as “SCADA” was first presented in 1959 at the centennial session of the American Dental Association (ADA) in New York City as a joint venture between then, DENTSPLY International and the ADA. Dr. Harold Hillenbrand, then Executive Director of the ADA and Mr. Henry M. Thornton, then President of DENTSPLY International, initiated the first program. The program has run continuously since 1959 and has expanded globally to include 19 national programs spanning 39 countries and engaging more than 7,000 student participants. In 2017, the supporting organizations for the U.S. Student Competition Advancing Dental Research and its’ Application (SCADA) transitioned to include Dentsply Sirona and the American Association for Dental Research. The objectives of the program are to encourage undergraduate dental students to actively participate in research and introduce students to dental society activities.

Each year, every U.S. Dental School is invited to select a student through its own student research or poster presentation competition to participate in this national program. The selected student representatives will then compete at the SCADA competition during the AADR annual meeting. Dentsply Sirona is proud to serve as the sponsor of this program by funding program-related awards and expenses. They also sponsor an orientation seminar for student clinicians on the evening preceding the judging and host a reception and dinner to honor the participants on the evening of the judging.
